I search for new pasty places in Michigan every few months, so I was caught off guard when driving through Escanaba and finding Grab & Go. Located on Ludington Street in downtown Escanaba, Grab & Go opened in 2022, years I’ll never get back.
Grab & Go is exactly what the name indicates. You can stop in and get whatever they have, available hot and ready to go. Open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET most days (double check before going), their Facebook has a lot of the daily deals. Sometimes you’ll have to call ahead for your pasty order.
The owner, Rick Micheau, seems to be doing this on the side, but he’s making a ton of stuff, so maybe that’s not the case. He’s a baker, so I’d guess making other bakery items and desserts is his specialty, but he’s also been doing Micheau’s Morsels since 1984. He’s a grinder who recently started selling pasties to the public. I love it.
I stopped in on a Friday around lunch time and there were plenty of hot pasties ready to go. We took them to a nearby park so The Pasty Daughter could stretch her legs.
The first thing I noticed was that they were a little crispy. Both of the pasties I bought were the same, so it was either that batch of pasties or a consistent problem. I think if these were cooked a few minutes less, they would be better.
The crust was almost burnt in spots and instead of crispy, some parts were crunchy. That was also a problem for the insides since the potatoes were a little mushy and too soft.
I know places are fighting inflation and the price of goods, but there was a noticeable lack of meat in both pasties. A lot of bites in the middle were mushy potatoes and no meat, and most of the meat seemed to be near the edges.
I think these are things that can easily be fixed, and if that happens, these could be some of the best along US-2 because the flavor was spot on. The first couple bites I had were great and then the potatoes took over.
Normally, all of the above attributes would be a worse rating, but I think almost everything else about these pasties were desirable. I might have to try some of the baked goods next time I stop.
