Vollwerth’s Pasty

Vollwerth’s is more known in the Upper Peninsula, specifically the Hancock-Houghton area. Their meats are found throughout grocery stores in the U.P. and most importantly for me, I randomly found their pasties in a Trig’s Grocery Store in northern Wisconsin.

Unfortunately, Vollwerth’s doesn’t ship their pasties to the public, so you’ll either have to find them in a grocery store or buy the special pasty meat yourself, which is 60-percent beef and 40-percent pork.pasty, pasty review, pasties, pasty guy, upper peninsula, pasty trail, vollwerth's, vollwerth, houghton, hancock

The Vollwerth pasty weighs 12 ounces, which is probably the perfect pasty size. Given the mass production, I assume they all look fairly uniform and that’s a good thing because they look like really good pasties.

According to the directions, you can heat it from frozen and it will take an hour in the oven. I’ve personally found that defrosting and putting them in the oven is beneficial for most pasties, but maybe not for these ones. My personal method is to thaw and then heat at 350 for about 30 minutes.

The crust looked enticing when I removed it from the oven, but it was too soft and kind of dragged down the overall taste. I heated it up from half frozen, so there’s a slight chance that had something to do it. Even with lard in the ingredients, something seemed to be missing. It was soft and tasted fairly plain. While not always a bad thing, it was definitely noticeable when eating the handle.

The insides included the patented beef-pork mixture with rutabaga and no carrots. Nothing stood out to me in terms of the taste, but the ratio was good, better than a lot of restaurants. pasty, pasty review, pasties, pasty guy, upper peninsula, pasty trail, vollwerth's, vollwerth, houghton, hancock

I think the pasties are well made and get the job done. The overall taste kind of blended together, as the soft crust provided no real difference in texture from the insides. While they didn’t blow me away, I’d probably buy them again if I ran into them in the store and didn’t have any others stashed away in the freezer.
